Applications are now being accepted for the George S. Dawkins Educational Scholarship.
This is a fund established to provide scholarships for deserving students from Tyrrell
County, North Carolina who wish to pursue a four-year degree at an accredited College
or University, with priority given to those planning degrees in building and construction
related fields, such as engineering, architecture, construction management, etc.
Applicants must attend Columbia High School for minimum of two years and must
graduate from Columbia High School. However, if there are not any students who plan
to major in any construction related fields, the scholarships can be awarded to other
deserving students from Tyrrell County. It was Mr. Dawkins desire that any student
could qualify for a scholarship that graduates from Columbia High School if they were
accepted at any accredited four-year college or university. Scholarship proceeds will be
paid directly to the recipient’s education institution. Recipients of the scholarship will be
eligible to continue receiving a Dawkins Scholarship as long as he or she remains a full-
time student and is in good standing with such college or university.
In 2024, funds may be available as well, for scholarship awards to students who wish to
attend a trade school or a continuing education program related in some aspect to construction (electrical, plumbing, etc.)  In addition to completion of the attached questionnaire, applicants are required to submit
an official transcript from Columbia High School, any post-secondary institution
transcript (if applicable) and two (2) letters of recommendation, which are to be sent
directly to the advisory board addressed to: Windy H. Rose, P O Box 54, Columbia, NC
27925. One letter of recommendation shall come from a teacher of the applicant and the
other letter of recommendation shall come from a non-relative in the community.
Interviews of the applicants may be scheduled by the advisory board after the deadline.
Applications must be received in the office of Windy H. Rose, 406 Main Street or PO
Box 54 in Columbia, NC no later than 5:00 p.m. April 15, 2024. Inquiries about the
application process or the scholarship program should be directed to the advisory board at
the address listed above.
