Hi! I’m Dr. Karen Carter. Yes, I am the first female to hold a Doctor of Philosophy/Religion degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
After teaching many years at the college level, I transferred to the high school. This academic year marks my 24th year of teaching and my second year here at Columbia. But I have known that teaching is my higher calling, my vocation, from childhood. I fell in love with English when I wrote essays in the seventh grade.
I am certified to teach English grades 9-12 and I absolutely love teaching here at Columbia Early College High School. I plan to teach here the rest of my life!
I enjoy writing poetry, reading, swimming, and observing all God's creatures--black bears, owls, and being near water. This summer I fell in love with Coquina Beach near Bodie Island.
Parents, guardians, please know that we are partners and I enjoy communicating and being involved in the community.
For my students, I hope you discover the gifts within you, and here within your grasp, to READ, WRITE, and THINK. I will teach you, give you my very best so that you succeed for life after high school—be it more education, employment, or enlistment. A 2019 Columbia High School graduate said to me, “You helped me discover my hidden talents and you always believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself.”
As your teacher, I want you to know: You are the reason I am here.
When a student realizes their teacher is a teammate, not an opponent, true learning begins. Know your team; let me help you WIN!
